What is depression? This is a question that can sometimes baffle the untrained mind. Depression in technical terms is an illness that has affected over twenty million people in the United States alone. However, this illness is one that is felt worldwide. Depression can affect the economy due to work missed, but the terrible thing about depression is the human suffering that can be felt. In order to avoid this disorder, a person must fully understand the question of what is depression.
To understand the idea of what is depression, a person must really understand what makes a depressive disorder. According to the American Medical Association, depression is a true illness. It can affect the body, mood, and thoughts. People can become physically ill from the affects of depression on the body. They can also have distorted thoughts that can sometimes even lead to a loss of life. Anxiety and depression that a person feels are real and not a sign of weakness. Dealing with this mental illness is not an easy task, and contrary to popular belief, depression cannot be willed or wished away, just as cancer and other ailments cannot be wished away.
When grappling with the question of what is depression, an individual must realize that they are not alone in their feelings of despair. However, many who are truly depressed do not seek medical treatment based solely on the stereotypes that are associated with having a mental illness. Gone are the days of torturous mental institutes that are portrayed in the movies. Today's clinics focus on trying to help people understand what exactly is making them depressed. Other forms of treatment include medication that can help a person live a full life void of depression.
When understanding the question of what is depression, a person must realize that everyone involved with the person diagnosed is affected. Depression can tear a family to shreds. If a person is a parent and has been diagnosed with depression, children feel the affects more than anyone. When one has a depressive disorder they do not feel like doing what they normally would enjoy. Playing with the kids may be out of the question. Postpartum mental illness can also keep a new mother from bonding with her baby completely. However, help is available to get a parent back on track.
By understanding what is depression a person can be on the road to recovery. Depression affects so many people worldwide, and it even affects the family and friends of the one that is going through the ordeal. Treatment options are available, and more than likely, a person with depression can recover fully if just given the chance. Depression is not something that will go away on its own, and sometimes, that is the hardest concept to understand.

Today's Tip On Depression
Anxiety depression is a serious mental illness that affects millions of people everyday. People who experience an anxiety disorder have lives that are filled with overwhelming anxiety and fear. Brief anxiety can be caused by a stressful event such as doing business presentations, having a first date, or giving an important speech. Anxiety depression, however, is chronic and will get progressively worse if left untreated. Many different kinds of anxiety depression exist, and each one can cause irrational fear and dread in a person. |
