Signs of Depression

Forget about spending endless hours searching the web for quality articles on the topic that best interests you. The following paper is an excellent proof of research and professional content.

The signs of depression can have a debilitating effect on an individual and his or her family. Unless depression is detected early, an individual that is afflicted with this disease can completely lose their self or in a worst case scenario: their life. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, "in any given 1-year period, 9.5 percent of the population, or about 20.9 million American adults, suffer from a depressive illness". With so many people in the United States afflicted with a depressive disorder, knowing the signs of depression can help people become mentally healthy more quickly.

Knowing the signs of depression can help a person seek treatment early. One of the first indication of this illness is a persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood. This constant state of mood can lead to feelings of hopelessness or pessimism and this is another one of the warning for this illness.

Other indications of this mental illness may include loss of interest in things that make that person happy, decreased levels of energy, constant fatigue, and even certain persistent physical signs such as a headache that will not go away or digestive disorders that become chronic. Of course, several other signs are common, and not every person will experience the same signs. Some may only feel a few signs and others may experience all.

A few other signs of depression deal with manic depression. This type of depression may also be known as bipolar depression. Bipolar depression is when a person has severe mood swings that can go from extreme highs to drastic lows. Manic depression signs include unusual irritability, racing thoughts, poor judgment, and inappropriate social behavior. These are a few of the signs of depression that occur with bipolar disorder. If a person is having severe mood swings that include the above mentioned symptoms, that individual needs to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Depression, no matter what type, has several signs to be aware of. If family and friends especially know the signs of depression to be aware of, an individual has a better chance of overcoming their disorder with the help of medical personnel. Overcoming the stereotypes that mental illnesses have associated with them in today's society is difficult. However, with support, a person that has the mental illness of depression can recover.

Today's Tip On Depression

Depression symptoms can show up in every person on the planet. No matter what sex or culture a person comes from they can still suffer from a depressive disorder. Even medical professionals must remember that depression affects everyone differently. For example, a woman who has just had a child will display depression differently than an elderly man. If one keeps these differences in mind, than the symptoms may become easier to spot.
